Synopsis
Book 1
Danie was a golden fox classified as guttouve because her mother had turned her back on the gold class job of Hunter to live in the forest with Danie's father. Danie had a fascination with being a Hunter despite her mother's objections. When she was 7 she snuck away while they were shopping in Vixinte to spy on some Hunters, eventually meeting one and being told how and when she could join. Unfortunately her mother saw her and she was no longer allowed to go to the city. When she turned 15 she decided to run away and become a Hunter, taking with her supplies and, on a lark, a miniwhip egg. As she left she encountered a juvenile shivae with an adult recently suffocated by a fallen tree, and decided to take him with her as well, giving him the name Quartz. She got lost on her travels through the woods, and was attacked by a band of koyoti. Syrys, who had been secretly following her, rescued her and brought her back to his camp to have her injuries tended. Two weeks later the wolves were breaking up camp for the winter and offered to take Danie with them. Since she had nowhere to go and it was now too late to join the Hunters that year she accepted. Her whip egg soon hatched (later named Wing) and a room was arranged for her in Centralis. She took several classes, including swordsmanship taught by Syrys, while being exposed to the various facets of wolf culture - especially the lack of color castes. Rama meanwhile was making his displeasure with the Akaelaes in general and Syrys in particular well known, while pushing for them to use Danie against their enemies the fox, with no success. As they spent time together Syrys and Danie began to feel affection for each other, but when he asked her if he could court her, she said no. The relationship grew strained and Rama immediately stepped in and convinced Danie she should leave right away and to take certain maps with her. Unfotunately they were secret military maps, so a hunting party led by Rama was formed to go after her as a spy. Syrys heard about it and headed him off, confronting Danie and retrieving the 'stolen' items. They both confessed their feelings, and this time she said yes to him courting her. She then went on her way to Vixinte while Syrys waited for Rama. A fight broke out, and Syrys ordered the hunting party to return and leave Rama where he lay. Soon after a fox patrol found Rama, and he considered which side he wanted to be on.
Book 2
Danie arrives at a fox city and enters a bar. At the bar is a gold fox named Duline as well as two rookies he's training. He determines there's something odd about Danie, so when she asks him for directions to Vixinte, he attempts to detain her for interrogation.
