Biology

Immigrant Cyantians were created by the Rumuah to function as ideal servants. Mostly they were either modified from or toward human base types. They did not throw human and animal DNA together and hoped for the best. It was like baking a cake or loaf of bread: so much of this ingredient and so much of that ingredient. In other words, so much of human DNA in this nitch of animal DNA and so much of animal DNA in this nich of human DNA.

As a result they are all mammalian, and all have fairly similar biologies. Provided the blood types matched, an Immigrant Cyantian could even receive blood from a human. A Cyantian race that had been modified from a human starting point would have fewer problems with such a blood transfusion than a race that had been modified for a Human end point starting from some other starting animal. (Note that all species that walk Plantigrade, that is with their whole foot flat on the ground, were modified from human staring points. The Digitigrade races all had other animals as their starting ancestors.) Native Cyantians cannot use human blood, nor can they accept the Immigrant Cyantians' blood.

All of the canines, felines, mice, raccoons, and foxes ARE omnivores. They can eat veggies quite well, although they have a preference for meat. The rabbits, ram, and other normally strict vegetarians can handle meat as well but prefer veggies. They WILL get sick though if they eat too much of one. They have foods for all different kinds, vegetarian and otherwise. The carnivores DO prefer meat,.. but it's not always readily available, so they get synthesized spam in a can.

Many are vision/action oriented. You WILL get a few who will run after a thrown object upon instinct (These are often not allowed into security. There's even a test to make sure that you don't have security/military who have that instinct. )

Because they are all human based, their eyesight is very much like humans. Full color, with males exhibiting colorblindness more than females. They have figured out how to correct this, since color blindness can cause serious problems in day to day life. The wilder Koyoti tend to be a bit more colorblind and more movement alert than the other races. They are affected to a small extent by whatever species they arose from. They can see good enough to not really need glasses. This does change as they get older. Their vision does degrade quicker than human vision with age, but they have ways to fix them.

Cyantians don’t bathe more than once a month to avoid stripping the natural oils out of their fur/hair. Because they don’t sweat like humans, they don’t tend to smell bad.

Human ancestry

Cyantians do not teach the fact that Cyantians have a human base DNA from which they were modified. They write off the fact that they have a common DNA because of their physical similarities. It is a sort of societal taboo. In spite of the fact that it was well documented by their creators, and most likely known by early Cyantians, they see it as merely something small they don't want to acknowledge as possible, more of a theory.

Health

Immigrant Cyantians as a race are very healthy, and do not take a lot of medicine. Those medicines they do take are typically of a much lower concentration than those taken by humans. For most drugs, just imagine that the recommended dosage would be equivalent to the overdose amount in a Cyantian. They'll get sicker quicker on too much sugar and alcohol as well.

Physical handicaps are usually treatable with their technology, either through advanced medicine or prosthetics, so it is not unheard of to have such things as a blind pilot. When it comes to mental handicaps, there is a more varied approach to it. Wolves tend to to care familywise for their mentally handicapped, although most of the time they can't do anything to fix the problem. Mounties will typically abort. Rabbits have the ability to self terminate as do the mice if they sense something wrong with a pregnancy and they do 'know'. Just the doubt in their minds will terminate it and absorb the fetus back into the body.

Reproduction

Gestation's six months long, for most of the Cyantian species. It does vary though from as few as four months *Rabbit* to as many as 10 *Native Cyantians* Nice thing about that, females only come into season once or twice a year depending on the species. Of course, during that time most of them are allowed to stay home and take time off to avoid distracting the males.

As far as interbreeding among the races, intermarriage among Cyantians is fairly uncommon. Those Cyantians that walk digitigrade (upon their toes) can interbreed amongst themselves, and those that are plantigrade (walking like humans) can interbreed amongst themselves. The two groups are not compatible with each other. It's possible for a Mounty and a wolf/coyote to intermarry, but children are deformed (the physical deformaty chance is VERY high) and most of the time die. [1] It's also genetically possible for a human to have 'normal' healthy kids with a plantigrade Cyantian, but it is highly taboo. The Fox and Cheetah are the only digitigrades that cannot naturally interbreed with ANY of the other races. Native Cyantians of course are a completely different physiology, and cannot interbreed with each other or with any of the immigrant species.

The plantigrades can interbreed among each other without many problems due to their genetic makeup being similar with physical attributes being dulled, combined, etc. to completely resembling one parent or the other. Interspecies marriages among plantigrade species are not rare, but you won't find many of them among pure groups.

Lynx and small cats can interbreed with both digitgrade and plantigrade with minimal problems, although preferably end up with felines of their own kind.

Humans would ONLY be able to interbreed with the Talin Race (Mounties, etc.) and there are very few, with probably no reported cases of humans interbreeding. It's even more abhorrent to mate with a human than Ricael. They all look down on inter-racial pairings (Talin mating Ricael or Human), although for legitimate reasons in the results of such pairings.

Pairings below that, Wolves/Coyotes, Tigers/Lions are considered pretty much the same race with slightly different features in the grand scheme of things relating to Cyantians. There isn't any problem with the resulting cubs. It's still rare, stripes stick to strips, spots to spots because the smells are 'right'. They all react strongly to pheromones. Humans don't tend to act 'correctly' at all, because they can't sense a Cyantians mood or intentions from smell, thus, they are very confusing to Cyantians.

Small cats and big cats tend to remain divided in Mounties, in three groups, Big Cats, Little Cats and Little-little cats They don't tend to interbreed due to size differences.

There are a handful of Wolf/Fox, Fox/Coyote hybrids that were created through artificial means, that are compatible with whichever genes are strongest. *Syke's Fox/Coyote, named Risk is out there... Risk is actually the son of a Fox princess and a Koyoti warrior. Firecracker is a Wolf/Fox/Coyote hybrid.*

A Wolf is loyal to her/his mate no matter what happens. A wolf spouse would never be traded in for a younger model no matter what, just out of this loyalty (not even counting the chance of having their throats ripped out and handed to them). The Fox are similar, as are the Koyoti. The felines on the other hand, do have a small problem with infidelity at times. The main ones running everything mate for life, like the saber toothed mountain lions. But the others kind of break up down the line: ordinary lions tend to have more than one wife, some are more solitary, but they have been raised to take on the role of raising their children mutually. The touch of humanity in their basic genetics carried with it a few good things as well, such as the responsibility to care for your children and do everything you can to help them survive.

Casual relationships are undertaken by all of them, they're just careful not to do anything that'll get them into trouble, like say any activity leading to cubs/kits. Relationships are there, they have their close groups of friends and cliques. Rabbits are kinda weird though, their entire focus is to have as many kits as possible and as many boys as possible. Among the rabbits, there are illegitimates quite frequently. It's next to impossible for a female to do anything but depend on her husband to support the family. But the husband does at least stay around. The Rams are a different story, they clan and believe strongly in monogamy. Family ties are better than family numbers.

Incest at a genetic level is expressly forbidden throughout most of the races on Cyantia. You do not marry your brothers, sisters, cousins or parents, due to the horrible implications. You also don't marry anyone who is only compatible enough to have deformed children.

Immigrant Cyantian do have a scruff of the neck, ie, just a lot of loose skin there, more evident when they're kits or cubs though. Easier for mother to grab them and make them behave and about the same as a human mother grabbing an ear.

The musculature and skeleton are slightly different in the hips than it is in humans, and it will be noted that fat cyantian wolves cannot travel well on all fours, neither can those who are arthritic or elderly. As a result they cannot do splits like humans can because their legs can’t go in those directions. They can do the split with one leg in front and one back, but not out to their sides.

In just about all of these species multiple births are probable, so having a separate bed for each child is uncommon. Single births are just slightly less numerous than two. Two is the most common among wolves. Two is also common for larger mounties, but three is more common for smaller ones. Mice and rabbits tend to have four+ and Fox average three.

Psychology

Cyantians think differently than humans, always keep that in mind, and each race thinks a few things differently as part of their cultures. When the Rumuah were creating them, they would have tampered with their neural wiring to insure that their servants would behave like proper servants and not turn on them en mass. Notably by trying to modify, if not eliminate altogether, their potential for ambition or greed (since either, especially greed, is the root of all evil).

Cyantians in general, believe that females are just as good as males in the majority of situations. Sometimes better. There are not any expectations past their own nature in the realms of being parents and what they can and cannot do, except for certain times of the year.

They use their ears and tails to express their emotions.

In general, they tend not to like forwardness, and spend a lot of time flirting. They like gifts, and dislike raised voices. [2]

Culture

All the varied races get along as well as can be expected. The main contentions would be between the Fox thinking they're superior to everyone else. Now, if there's a food shortage, there could be problems because the mainly carnivorous types WILL eat the herbivore types. They will eat anything with meat in it if they're hungry enough and the herbivores will also eat meat if there's no vegetation. Culturally, it is acceptable for them eat what they do. However, it is against the law for Cyantians to eat other sentients.

Most of the races in the Mars Academy are young so stereotypes among them are not quite as strong as they are among the mature adults... who will get into it more than the kits will. Scuffling does occur, that's why there's a security department

General fighting among Cyantians is common, but usually not to the extent of actually harming the other. Most of it's bluffing, except for a few over agressive males or females, the usual extent is merely shoving someone to show that you're stronger than them. It doesn't take them long to figure out that someone else is stronger than you and not to mess with them. Of course,... close friends or a close group of cyantians might go a bit further. Celina has bitten Darius several times to get her points across to him. Does he retaliate? No. Could he easily beat her up? Yes. Why doesn't he retaliate? Because she's expressing just how angry she is with him at any given point and the amount of physical harm she could do if provoked isn't worth the time and pain. Is Darius a wimp? No way. He just doesn't see a need to react other to make sure she has his attention. Now, if someone who's a stranger to him did that, he'd probably trounce up and down on them royally and chew them inside out in offense.

Needless to say, the humans who have lived there are very affected by what they see in the Cyantians and mimic their relationships as their own role models, although they don't tend to bite each other. Shoving, picking on each other if they're irritated and a general disregard for personal space are common among them. Unlikely any of the humans raised in that environment are antisocial, so far.

Latin is only a general tongue... and that's kinda had to be shifted around a lot. It's spoken by Cyantians, but is also fairly well warped latin. Most of the other languages are derivatives of the ancient's language and native languages. Mounties are heavily influenced by Digni language.

Cyantians do NOT care about crossbreeds that much unless it causes harm to cubs. In cases like the Cissans, there IS a lot of flack, but cases of wolves and koyotis crossing, nothing. Wolves don't like the thought of using science to cross natural barriers. Rama was doubtless picked on quite a bit, as was his sister by many other wolves, which is one of the reasons why Syrys and Alpha make it very clear to Vin that they do not think this way. They hold the parents at fault, but would never step in with anything more than words of advice and expect them to deal with the consequences.

Cyantians take great offense to being thought of as, or called, an animal. To them it means souless, wild, immoral, murderer, thief, etc. Whether it be from a Human or fellow Cyantian (any Human who would be foolish enough to call them that might end up getting beaten up for it). Not only being called it, but apparently in the case of those of Canidae heritage, acting like it (being made to fetch sticks like a common Earth animal).

There are many instances of the cubs and adults running on all fours. Syrys did for most of the Prequel. Silver and others have in Campus Safari and Darius has more than once earlier in Akaelae. It’s not frowned upon in the least, but usually not done on the spur of the moment in the case of adults because they like keeping their clothing clean. Running indoors for adults is difficult for obvious reasons, but there is plenty of room for cubs to do it, although slick floors have bested more than one. Protective gloves and bands are normally worn for running on all fours outdoors or on training courses. Wolves lack pads on their hands and the gloves help in acting as a replacement for traction and shock absorption. They love to travel in this way in forests, mountains and uneven ground. Their bodies are built for it with a narrower, deeper rib cage than that of a human. Unfortunately, they cannot travel comfortably on all fours over a long distance on flat land. It’s more efficient for them to travel bipedally in these cases. [3]
